What these figures show

Billboards sit where people live, travel, celebrate, and look up.

Out-of-home advertising covers formats encountered in public spaces, including billboards, transit displays, and street furniture. The industry data above shows that digital formats were a significant and growing part of U.S. out-of-home spending in 2024.

The Census data supplies the audience context: most Americans lived in urban areas in 2020, where public spaces and travel routes bring people together. For a personal billboard surprise, the most meaningful statistic is still the one person who sees their name in lights.

Methodology and sources

How we built this page.

This page combines the latest full-year U.S. out-of-home revenue release available from the Out of Home Advertising Association of America with 2020 Census urban-area figures published by the U.S. Census Bureau. We use the source’s own date for each statistic and do not estimate missing figures.
